Our History

The Miss Utah Navajo Pageant boasts a rich history dating back to 1979. Founded by Clyde Benally, the pageant emerged from a desire to instill pride in Utah Navajo youth. Unlike the isolated experiences of his childhood, Benally envisioned a platform for young women to celebrate their heritage and embrace their identity.

While details about the pageant’s early years are scarce, it likely took inspiration from the established Miss Navajo Nation pageant, which began in 1952. There might have been earlier, less formalized events recognizing “Miss Navajo” through crowd applause at the Navajo Nation Fair.

Over the years, the Miss Utah Navajo Pageant has evolved to become a prestigious event. It emphasizes cultural knowledge alongside beauty and talent. Contestants showcase their understanding of Navajo language, traditions, and history. The winner becomes an ambassador, representing the Utah Navajo community and inspiring future generations to connect with their heritage.
